LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH (LOTE)

Basic Belief |

|
A LOTE program provides children with exposure to learning a second language as part of their general education. LOTE also promotes an interest, tolerance, awareness, knowledge and understanding of other cultures. |

|
Guidelines |
|
|
1. |
Our LOTE program will focus on Japanese and will be promoted within the school environment and amongst staff, school administration, students and the wider community. |
|
2. |
The program will be based on the Victorian Essential Learning Standards and associated Course Advice. |
|
3. |
The time allotment to be provided for each class will be: 1.5 hours per week for Years 5 and 6, 1.5 hours per week for Years 3 and 4, 1.5 hours per week for Years 2 and 1 1 hour per week for Year Prep. |

Classroom teachers will be expected to be involved in the joint implementation of the program and will be supported by the LOTE teacher. |

5. |
Japanese language will be linked to other Essential Learnings is where appropriate (eg. Integrated topics / mathematics). |

6. |
Student assessment in regard to their competencies relating to speaking, listening, reading, writing, and comprehension skills, will be an ongoing process. This will reflect the CSF2 Guidelines. |

7. |
Appropriate information regarding the LOTE program will be available to the school community. |
|
8. |
Efforts will be made to regularly host a native speaking Japanese assistant. School-based procedures will be followed. |
|
9. |
Commitment and support from the school community to the program, in relation to the provision of resources, accommodation and professional development will be encouraged. |
|
10. |
Work towards promoting P-12 LOTE studies will be ongoing. |
